Mladen Bizumic (b. 1976, New Zealand) lives and works in Vienna. "Mladen Bizumic’s work begins from a deceptively simple question: “What is photography?” And while not the first to ask it, Bizumic will offer an original and complex answer that unfolds itself between two oppositions; that of analogue and digital photography, and of modernist and conceptual artistic practice."*
For Bizumic, a photograph is precise, valuable and yet obsolete "image-object" in the digital era. Material properties of the photographic are explored to reveal the means of its production, distribution and reception marked by the social relations of globalisation, corporate capitalism and contemporary art.
Bizumic's work has been exhibited in the 9th Lyon Biennale, 10th Istanbul Biennale, the 2nd Moscow Biennial, MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, Leopold Museum, Vienna, KM– Künstlerhaus Halle für Kunst & Medien, Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz, Zacheta National Museum, Warsaw, Foundation d'entreprise Ricard, Paris. Among others, Bizumic has held solo exhibitions at MOSTYN, Wales, Georg Kargl BOX, Vienna, Zamek - Centre for Art, Poznan, the Salon of the MOCA Belgrade, Adam Art Gallery, Wellington, Govett Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, ARTSPACE, Auckland and other venues.
His works have been collected by public institutions such as MUMOK, Vienna, MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, the George Eastman Museum, Rochester, New York, Te Papa - Museum of New Zealand, Wellington, FRAC des Pays de la Loire, France, Chartwell Collection / Auckland Art Gallery, University of Wellington Art Collection, Hocken Collections, Dunedin and others.
Bizumic studied for his PhD in Art Theory and Cultural Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna; was the Artist-In-Residence at the Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; the Frances Hodgkins Fellow at the Otago University in New Zealand; received both his Masters of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts, from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland.
