“Buy the ticket, take the ride.”
Hunter S. Thompson

Curated by Karin Mayr and Martin Sturm, The Intransigent Ticket-The Artist as a Filter, presents current approaches to contemporary art by 15 artists, all based in Austria. Reflected here is a landscape of current practices by artists located in Vienna and making work within a wide range of strategies, interdisciplinary practices, and materials. One aspect of this exhibition is an emphasis on the production of the artwork itself; these artists allow for clues about
the process of making these artworks to become visible. In some cases, the process is fully
revealed in the finished piece. In addition, there is a clear influence of new media and an
implementation of recent technologies in all of these works. The selected artworks also expose the formal and thematic tensions between traditional forms of artistic expression and these current technologies.
Whether compressing, reducing, or amplifying their ideas, these 15 artists distort, distill, cut, and
transform their works while filtering doubt, irony, excitement, ennui – is this just the ticket?
Financial support for the exhibition is provided by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts, and Culture; the Austrian Consulate General in Los Angeles; and the Government of Upper Austria. Karin Mayr and Martin Sturm would like to thank: Mika Cho, Abbas Daneshvari, Anneliese Geyer, Karin Lanzoni, Carole Lung, Andreas Lins, Olga Okunev, Exhibition Commitee and the Fine Arts Gallery student assistants: Alex Lemke, Collin
Stafford, Shirly Ortez, Shrinivasan Rajagopalan.
